Light Media Limited Lantern Gallery Trade

The six desks of the lighting trade

Light Media Limited runs pendant batches, bulb lots and showroom fit-out orders from its loft at Rm 26 2/F, 118 Wai Yip St, Kwun Tong, Hong Kong - 999077, Hong Kong (HK). Each of the six services below is owned by a named desk on the gallery floor, and each has a clear point at which the work is considered finished.

Pendant Batch Bays

The pendant batch bays are the first station a new order meets. Cartons are opened one at a time, in the order the pendants will hang, never in bulk. Each unit is mounted on an adjustable test cord and dropped to one of three reference heights so that shade profile, cord sag and canopy finish can be judged beside its neighbours. A batch is photographed as a sequence rather than as single items, because the trade is full of cases where a pendant is fine alone and wrong in company.

Every bay keeps a reference card for the profile in hand. When a unit is checked, the card is clipped beside it and the unit is marked with the batch letter that will travel with the order to the client. A batch is released only when the count on the rail matches the count on the packing slip and the photographs have been filed against the order number. Clients often ask whether they can see the bay work in progress, and on most working days the answer is yes, provided the visit is booked ahead.

Bulb Lot Runs

Bulb lot runs are counted in tens and grouped by base type and colour temperature. The purpose is simple: a retailer should be able to shelve a tray without re-sorting it on the shop floor. Trays are opened under a working lamp, counted, and checked for crushed bases, cloudy envelopes or mismatched coatings. Anything that fails is set aside and noted on the lot sheet rather than quietly returned to the tray.

After checking, each tray is resealed with a printed slip naming the lot number, the count, the Kelvin grouping and the date of the run. That slip is the reference for reorders. When a client asks for more of the same warmth six months later, the lot number allows the desk to match the earlier group instead of guessing from a product photograph. Large orders can be split into retail-ready trays at no extra charge, and mixed carts are avoided unless a client specifically asks for them.

Showroom Fit-out Desks

A showroom fit-out desk treats a display room as an integrated system. Track routes are drawn against the actual ceiling grid rather than an idealised rectangle, sockets are assigned to fixtures by load, and dimming zones are marked where the room needs to change mood. Sight lines from the entrance are plotted so that the first pendant a visitor sees is the one the client intends to sell.

The desk issues a plan set with a removable socket map. If a single fixture changes late in the process, the map is updated and the rest of the sheet stands. That one habit has saved more fit-out schedules than any other in the loft. Each plan set also carries a plain language summary for the installer, written without trade shorthand, so that a contractor who joins the job late can read the intent of the layout without a phone call to the desk.

Dimming Check Windows

Dimming is where a beautiful pendant becomes a problem. The check windows run each dimmer family through three bands: a low window for flicker and cut-off, a mid window for warmth through the useful range, and a full window for steady top output. Notes are taken by hand at each band, because a written line catches what a video on a phone cannot.

The findings travel with the batch. If a family shows a sharp cut-off at the low end, the desk will recommend a different driver or a different dimmer before the order is confirmed. Clients receive those notes even when the recommendation is to keep the original specification, so that the behaviour of the wall is known in advance. Retail floors that dim through the evening get a separate note on mid band stability, since that is the band a customer will actually stand in.

Wiring Kit Reviews

Wiring kit reviews exist because most site problems are small mismatches rather than large faults. A lamp holder that will not seat in a shade collar, a connector block a size too wide for a canopy, a terminal sleeve missing from a kit: each of these stops an installer for half a day. The review lays the whole kit out against the drawing and checks every part, one line at a time.

Kits are sealed only after the review is signed. The signature records who checked the set and when, and the note stays with the order record. Where a substitution is needed, the desk writes the reason on the note rather than simply swapping the part, because an unexplained substitution becomes a puzzle for the next person who opens the box.

Install Quote Sittings

An install quote sitting brings the plan, the kit and the site notes to one table. The conversation covers the rooms, the rails, the dimming zones and the access needed on the day. Quotes are itemised by room and by rail so that a client who must trim scope can drop one rail without losing the logic of the whole layout.

The figure is written only after the dimming windows and the wiring review are complete. That order matters: a quote built before those checks is a guess dressed as a price. Clients leave the sitting with a written figure, a scope list and a date by which the parts will be ready. If the site changes after the sitting, the desk will reissue the affected lines rather than the entire quote.

How a job moves through the loft

A new order enters at the pendant batch bays. The sequence is hung, photographed and released against its packing slip. Bulb lot runs follow on the same day where stock allows, so that the warmth of the bulbs can be checked against the pendants that will carry them. The showroom fit-out desk then takes the plan and draws the route, the socket map and the dimming zones together.

Once the plan is signed, the wiring kit review lays out every part against the drawing. Dimming check windows are run on a sample of each family, and any note that affects the specification is sent to the client before the quote is written. Finally the install quote sitting produces an itemised figure, and the order is scheduled. Nothing in this sequence is skipped for small jobs, only shortened.
